Press Release
Get on your Bikes and follow in the tracks of the Olympians!
With 100 days to go to the London 2012 Olympics, Big Bike 2012 is the
perfect chance for everyone in Northern Ireland to get involved in an
Olympic event right on our doorstep! Pictured at the countdown at Stormont,
is Caroline Ryan, an Elite women's cyclist who has just arrived back from
Melbourne after winning a Bronze medal at the World Track Championship.
Caroline is testing the course ahead of the pre-Olympic qualifying event,
Celtic Chrono on May 13th, which will be hosted in the grounds of the famous
building. Pictured with Caroline is 17 year old Patrick Bradley from
Holywood who has signed up to do the 22 mile charity fun cycle, which
follows the same route as the cycling pre-Olympic qualifier.
Big Bike 2012 gives cyclists of all abilities (15+) the chance to cycle
through the beautiful landscape of Belfast, Castlereagh, Ards, Bangor and
Holywood, whilst keeping fit and healthy and raising money for their
favourite charity. Patrick Bradley was keen to ride the course when he
discovered that the roads were going to be segregated for the event, he said
âthis helps me raise money for my charity as well as compete against my
friends, and with the roads being segregated it provides a safe environment
and I have no need to worry about cars on the road, plus its also a great
way to keep fit!â
The Big Bike lesuire cycle will begin at 10.15am. Marshalls will line the
route to ensure the safety of all involved, itâs also a great opportunity to
raise money for a worthy cause, the charities include Diabetes UK, NSPCC,
Action Cancer, Aware Defeat Depression NI and the Northern Ireland Hospice.
For those non cyclists or any younger children there will be a fantastic
range of activities and entertainment taking place in the grounds of the
Stormont Estate allowing everyone to get involved in the action. We
encourage everyone to come down to support the elite women reaching the
finish line. For more details or to register for the event, please visit
